Metamorphosis

At the farmers market a little while ago, a flower booth was selling clipped twigs with Monarch butterfly cocoons on them. We bought one and took it home, and over the next week it hatched before our eyes.

I’ll let the pictures mostly speak for themselves.

The cocoon had this gorgeous golden ring around it, I’ve never seen anything like it.

After a few days, it turned black and semi-translucent. You can see the wings of the butterfly showing through.

The day it hatched.

After it came out of the cocoon, Rach carried it out on her finger, and it just sat with her on the railing of my porch for about 20 minutes, getting a feel for things, presumably.

  1. this was so special! like a magical ‘kid moment’ that i’d missed!

  2. How amazing to be able to buy that at a farmer’s market. Unbelievable.

  3. the golden ring comes from mineral deposits – it’s truly amazing that every monarch chrysalis is completely (nearly) identical
